The Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray to a one-year, $1.3 million contract following his release from the Arizona Cardinals.
On Thursday, the Minnesota Vikings signed quarterback Kyler Murray to a one-year contract worth $1.3 million. This low-cost acquisition follows Murray’s release by the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, a move facilitated by the $36.8 million already guaranteed to him by his former team. Murray, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2019 draft, joins a roster featuring J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 pick in the 2024 draft. McCarthy has started only 10 games across two seasons due to various injuries and finished his most recent campaign with a 35.6 QBR, ranking 24th among 26 qualifying quarterbacks who started at least 10 games in 2025.
Kyler Murray enters the Vikings organization with a career total of 153 touchdowns and a lifetime record of 38-48-1 over seven NFL seasons. His tenure in Arizona was marked by significant medical hurdles, including a torn right ACL that impacted his 2022 and 2023 seasons. Additionally, a foot injury limited the quarterback to just five games in 2025. During his time with the Cardinals, the team briefly inserted a "homework clause" into his 2022 contract extension to address concerns regarding his work ethic and video game habits, though public backlash led to the removal of that specific provision.
Tactical Shifts in Kevin O’Connell’s Offense
Head coach Kevin O’Connell typically utilizes an under-center offensive system that emphasizes the intermediate middle of the field. This represents a departure for Murray, who operated almost exclusively from the shotgun under Kliff Kingsbury and rarely targeted the intermediate middle while playing for Drew Petzing. Because Murray is a shorter quarterback, accessing those specific throwing lanes can be difficult. However, O’Connell has previously shown flexibility by adjusting schemes for McCarthy, replacing intermediate in-breaking routes with out-breaking routes that are easier to visualize.
Murray is characterized as a hypermobile athlete with a fast release and a high-quality vertical ball. These traits contrast with former starter Kirk Cousins, whose strengths were described as the exact opposite of Murray's. NFL national analyst Ben Solak suggests that if Murray returns with his previous levels of acceleration and suddenness, he can transition into a system quarterback who relies on O’Connell’s schemed concepts rather than creating every explosive play individually. This infrastructure includes play-action, bootlegs, and scripted shot plays designed to keep the passer in a rhythm.
Implications for J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings Roster
Vikings officials stated in January their intent to provide genuine competition for McCarthy. While O’Connell has not publicly named a starter, Murray is considered the favorite for the Week 1 role due to McCarthy’s need to gain ground in the coming months. History suggests a difficult path for the younger quarterback; since 2000, no quarterback drafted in the top 10 who was replaced in the offseason has ever reclaimed his starting role with his original team. McCarthy currently joins Trey Lance, Paxton Lynch, and Johnny Manziel as the only first-round quarterbacks since the turn of the century to receive fewer than 10 starts with their drafting franchise.
To retain his position, McCarthy must prove he has altered his playing style to avoid the injuries that have hampered his early career. He possesses the advantage of familiarity with the Vikings' playbook, whereas Murray faces a steep learning curve. Despite this, the veteran locker room will be watching the competition during OTAs and training camp, where both players may receive first-team repetitions. If the organization prioritizes the 2026 playoff race, Murray's experience is viewed as the safer bet for immediate production.
Fantasy Value and Arizona’s Quarterback Future
From a fantasy football perspective, Murray remains a lower-tier QB1 candidate due to his dual-threat history, which includes five seasons of at least 400 rushing yards. His presence in Minnesota is expected to bolster the value of wide receiver Justin Jefferson, maintaining his status as a high-level WR1. Additionally, Jordan Addison is projected to produce WR3 numbers within this QB-friendly system. The move provides Murray a chance to silence critics who have questioned his leadership and his ability to win high-stakes games.
In the wake of Murray's departure, the Arizona Cardinals have signed Gardner Minshew to a one-year deal. The Cardinals also have Jacoby Brissett under contract for 2026. While reports suggest a depth chart featuring Brissett as QB1 and Minshew as QB2, sources indicate that Brissett has not yet been officially informed of his starting status. Arizona holds the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft, though a first-round selection at the quarterback position is currently deemed unlikely unless the team moves around the draft board.
