Ludvig Åberg holds a two-stroke lead at the Players Championship after a second-round 63 that featured a front-nine 29 and two eagles.
Ludvig Åberg surged to the top of the Players Championship leaderboard at TPC Sawgrass, carding a second-round 63 to reach 12-under par at the halfway mark. The Swedish golfer, who practices at this course, recorded a 29 on the front nine and finished his Friday round with two eagles to secure a two-stroke advantage. Xander Schauffele, a two-time major winner in 2024, sits in second place at 10-under after posting a 7-under 65 during the early wave. Schauffele demonstrated elite precision by hitting all 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens, leading the field in strokes gained: approach with a mark of 11.413 through 36 holes.
Sepp Straka remains in contention at 7-under par following a 2-under 70 on Friday. The 32-year-old Austrian, who moved to Georgia at age 14, has been perfect in scrambling, converting 15-of-15 opportunities through two rounds. Despite hitting only six fairways in his opening round, Straka improved to 11 of 14 fairways after a range session. He is currently gaining 3.5 strokes on the greens and has limited his mistakes to a single bogey over the first 36 holes. Straka enters the weekend with four career victories over the last four seasons and experience from two winning European Ryder Cup teams.
Bridgeman and Schauffele Chase the Lead
Jacob Bridgeman sits at 6-under par after following an opening 70 with a 4-under 68 on Friday. The 26-year-old, who won the Genesis Invitational last month, has maintained a streak of finishing inside the top 25 in every event this season. While his ball-striking ranks near the middle of the field in strokes gained: tee to green, his putting has been a standout metric, gaining 5.6 strokes on the field. Bridgeman noted that TPC Sawgrass requires a conservative approach off the tee, a style that has yielded three top-10 finishes for him this year.
Xander Schauffele’s performance marks a significant return to form after a rib injury hampered his 2025 campaign. After hitting only five fairways in round one, he worked with swing coach Chris Como to rectify his driving. The 10-time PGA Tour winner stated he felt in control and was attacking the course rather than playing defensively. His 65 on Friday allowed him to hold the clubhouse lead before Åberg’s late charge. Schauffele is one of eight players currently within six shots of the lead as the tournament moves into the final 36 holes.
Defending Champions and World Number One Struggle
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy have both faced difficulties taming the tougher conditions at Ponte Vedra. Scheffler, the world No. 1, followed an even-par 72 with a Friday performance where he missed seven fairways and six greens. He lost 1.3 strokes putting in the second round, a decline of nearly three strokes compared to his opening 18 holes. Despite these struggles, Scheffler made the cut by two strokes. He previously proved his ability to come from behind at this event in 2024, when he erased a six-stroke deficit against Wyndham Clark with a final-round 64 to win.
Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, is currently 1-over par after rounds of 74 and 71. McIlroy entered the week without a practice round due to a back injury sustained while warming up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He secured his place for the weekend by birdying the par-5 ninth hole, his final hole of Friday, after narrowly missing a 31-foot eagle attempt. To manage his back, McIlroy is avoiding pre-round workouts and utilizing muscle relaxers and physical therapy. He noted that while his putting has been cold, his ball-striking improved during the second round.
Weekend Outlook at TPC Sawgrass
The leaderboard features several high-profile names, including Justin Thomas, a former Players winner who remains within six shots of Åberg. Collin Morikawa was forced to withdraw from the competition due to a back injury, altering the field's dynamic. Tournament leader Åberg credited his success to a simplified mindset and his familiarity with the layout, though he emphasized that execution remains paramount. With the lead at only two strokes, the back nine on Sunday remains a volatile environment where golfers like Cam Young and Schauffele are expected to apply pressure. Statistics show that players four or five strokes back remain viable threats, provided they can replicate the low-scoring rounds seen on Friday.
