San Francisco moved to 6-0 after Malik Mustapha's goal-line pass breakup and a late sack by Romello Height and Keion White preserved a 23-17 win.

The San Francisco 49ers improved to 6-0 on Monday night with a 23-17 victory over the Washington Commanders at Santa Clara. Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 21 of 29 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown, while running back Christian McCaffrey recorded 25 touches for 117 scrimmage yards and two scores. Despite leading 20-3 at halftime, the Niners had to survive a late Washington comeback attempt that was halted when safety Malik Mustapha broke up a fourth-down pass at the goal line, followed by a clinching sack from Romello Height and Keion White.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels finished 29-of-40 for 300 yards and two second-half touchdowns. The Commanders' defense, which had allowed 303 yards in the first half, limited San Francisco to just 64 yards and three points in the final two quarters. However, Washington's red zone defense struggled early, conceding touchdowns on the first three 49ers trips to extend a streak of 12 consecutive red zone touchdowns allowed before forcing a field goal late in the second quarter.

San Francisco faced significant injury challenges as wide receiver Mike Evans exited the game after a 16-yard catch due to a sore right Achilles. With Evans sidelined, 49ers wideouts not named Evans managed only two catches for 35 yards. The team was already playing without Deebo Samuel Sr., Ricky Pearsall, and Christian Kirk. Special teams also struggled for the 49ers, as kicker Eddy Pineiro missed his third extra point of the season and Jacob Cowing muffed a punt inside the 5-yard line.

Purdy reached 1,500 career pass attempts during the opening drive, making him the highest-rated passer among qualified quarterbacks in NFL history. The 49ers next travel to face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, while the 1-4-1 Commanders head into a bye week before hosting the Philadelphia Eagles on November 1.
