49ers Reward Kyle Shanahan With Multiyear Contract Extension

San Francisco has extended coach Kyle Shanahan, who has led the franchise to six playoff appearances and two Super Bowls since 2017.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed head coach Kyle Shanahan to a multiyear contract extension, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday. While specific terms of the new deal remain undisclosed, the 46-year-old coach was previously under contract through the 2027 season. The 49ers opened their 2026 campaign in Australia with a 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Shanahan has compiled an 83-67 regular-season record across 10 seasons, reaching the 10-win mark five times. Under his leadership, San Francisco has made six playoff appearances, including Super Bowl trips following the 2019 and 2023 seasons. With two additional games coached, he will tie Bill Walsh for the most games at the helm of the franchise.

Since Shanahan’s appointment on Feb. 6, 2017, the 49ers lead the NFL in yards margin, outgaining opponents by 7,774 yards. This total exceeds the second-ranked Buffalo Bills by more than 1,300 yards. The extension follows a summer in which Shanahan sustained a concussion, three broken ribs, and a broken left hand in a July 14 car accident.
