The 32-year-old was struck by a foul ball off the bat of teammate Michael Busch during the fourth inning of a game in Cincinnati. While the impact caused fractures and significant swelling under his left eye, medical evaluations determined that the injuries will not require surgery. According to ESPN, Bregman has already resumed light activity, including a workout on Tuesday.

Manager Craig Counsell noted that the infielder must complete batting practice, field ground balls, and run the bases before being cleared for game action. The team is currently exploring protective equipment options for his face. In Bregman's absence, rookie Pedro Ramirez and Matt Shaw are expected to handle duties at third base. Ramirez started at the position during Tuesday's 8-2, 12-inning loss to the Miami Marlins.

Bregman enters the final week of the season hitting .262 with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs. Since the All-Star break, he ranks fourth in OPS among all qualified players. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer stated that the team expects Bregman to be fully ready for the postseason, as the most significant medical complications from the incident were avoided. The Cubs are monitoring his recovery daily as the swelling subsides.
