Amen Thompson blocked a potential game-tying bucket by Victor Wembanyama with five seconds left to preserve a 114-110 Houston Rockets win.
The Houston Rockets defeated the San Antonio Spurs 114-110 at the Moody Center on Friday, securing their first 2-0 start since the 2017-18 season. With five seconds remaining and Houston leading 112-110, 6-foot-7 guard Amen Thompson blocked a last-gasp attempt at the rim by Victor Wembanyama. Following the rejection, Fred VanVleet recovered the ball and made two free throws to finalize the four-point margin.
Alperen Sengun led all scorers with 29 points, adding seven rebounds and seven assists. Sengun scored 18 of his points in the second half, including 14 in the fourth quarter. This performance marked his 35th career game with at least 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists, tying Steve Francis for the second-most such games by a Rockets player under the age of 25.
Thompson and Kevin Durant each contributed 20 points in the victory. Thompson’s final stat line included 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two steals. During the third quarter, Thompson also completed a three-point play after dunking over Wembanyama off a Durant assist. The Spurs reached the final sequence after De'Aaron Fox lobbed a pass to Wembanyama over Jabari Smith Jr., though the ensuing shot attempt was thwarted by Thompson’s 7-foot reach.
