Andrew Bailey secured a 5-and-4 victory over Nate Smith at Sand Valley to earn invitations to two major championships in 2027.

Andrew Bailey defeated Nate Smith 5 and 4 on Thursday to win the U.S. Mid-Amateur at The Lido at Sand Valley. The 34-year-old Cleveland resident took a permanent lead with a birdie on the 23rd hole and completed his final 17 holes without a single bogey. By winning the championship in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, Bailey earned exemptions into the Masters and the U.S. Open for 2027.

Smith, a 43-year-old home builder from Idaho, held the lead for the majority of the morning’s 18 holes but never led by more than 2 up. Bailey leveled the match with a par on the 18th hole before the pair traded birdies to open the afternoon session. The turning point occurred when Bailey won three consecutive holes to pull away from Smith during the second half of the match.

Bailey, who regained his amateur status in 2017, previously worked as a national sales manager for Holderness & Bourne. His competitive career was once delayed by a severe wrist injury sustained while rock climbing, which required more than two years to heal. Although he attended the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills this past summer as an apparel representative, his victory on Thursday ensures he will return to the major championship as a competitor next year.
