Anthony Davis recorded 34 points and 12 rebounds in his Washington debut to lead the Wizards to a 128-116 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. Trae Young contributed 20 points and 13 assists in the win, marking the first time the two stars played together since being acquired by the franchise last season. Washington secured the result behind a 21-2 scoring run early in the fourth quarter, overcoming poor perimeter shooting that persisted through much of the contest.
According to the Associated Press, Davis received "MVP" chants from the home crowd before the conclusion of the first quarter. The performance followed a nine-month absence for the big man, who missed the remainder of the previous season due to injury following his trade to Washington. The Wizards played the opener without AJ Dybantsa, the top overall draft pick, who was sidelined by an ankle injury.
The victory comes for a franchise that won only 50 total games over the previous three seasons. While Davis can become a free agent after this season, his debut helped Washington overcome a third-quarter push by Milwaukee to secure the double-digit win. Young noted after the game his intention to help Davis enter the MVP conversation as the team pursues a more competitive standing.
