Arozarena Hits Two Homers in 5-4 Mariners Walk-Off Win Over Cubs

Randy Arozarena became the seventh player in MLB history to hit a leadoff and walk-off home run in the same game during Seattle's 5-4 victory.

Randy Arozarena launched a 404-foot two-run home run to straightaway center field in the ninth inning to secure a 5-4 victory for the Seattle Mariners over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The walk-off blast came off Cubs closer Jacob Webb (6-3) and capped a late-game rally after Seattle entered the final frame trailing 4-2. Leo Rivas brought the Mariners within a single run earlier in the ninth with a two-out RBI single. Arozarena finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBIs, having previously opened the scoring with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. With this performance, he joined an elite group as only the seventh player in Major League Baseball history to record both a leadoff and a walk-off home run in a single contest.

Kade Anderson's Historic Major League Debut

Kade Anderson, the third overall pick in the 2025 draft, made his major league debut at 22 years old, becoming the first player from his draft class to reach the big leagues. The left-hander tossed 5⅔ innings, surrendering three earned runs while striking out five batters. Anderson utilized 81 pitches, a total that surpassed any of his previous outings in the minor leagues. He dominated through the first five frames, limiting Chicago to one run on two hits. However, his outing shifted in the sixth inning when he allowed two solo home runs before being removed from the game. Reliever Michael Rucker (1-4) earned his first win of the season for his efforts out of the bullpen.

Scoring Breakdown and Game Flow

The Chicago Cubs (74-56) initially got on the board in the fifth inning against Anderson via a sacrifice fly from Kevin Alcántara. Seattle held two separate leads prior to the sixth inning; they first led 1-0 following Arozarena’s first-inning homer and later regained a lead on an RBI groundout by Dominic Canzone in the fifth. The Cubs surged ahead with a three-run sixth inning to take a 4-2 advantage that held until the bottom of the ninth. Despite the loss, Chicago maintains a 4.5-game lead in the National League wild-card race.

Roster Adjustments and Playoff Implications

Seattle (62-68) saw a late change to their starting lineup when utility man Brendan Donovan was scratched after being hit in the head by a baseball during pre-game batting cage sessions. Weston Wilson started at third base in his absence, batting eighth in the order. The victory moves the Mariners to within 3½ games of Houston in the American League West standings and places them two games back for the final American League wild-card position. The Mariners' pitching staff managed to navigate the Cubs' lineup despite the three-run outburst in the middle innings, setting the stage for Arozarena's historic ninth-inning heroics at T-Mobile Park.
