Arsenal defeated Lille 3-0 at home on Tuesday to maintain a perfect start to the UEFA Champions League group stage. Jurriën Timber opened the scoring in the second half, marking his first home start since March by dinking a finish over goalkeeper Berke Özer. Following the opening goal, Mikel Arteta introduced Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Kai Havertz as part of a triple substitution. Eberechi Eze doubled the lead with his first goal of the season, side-footing the ball home after Ødegaard and Saka combined. Saka then scored his 19th European goal for the club, moving into second place on Arsenal’s all-time European scoring list behind Thierry Henry.
The victory followed a 65th-minute tactical shift after Lille had a goal by Ayase Ueda disallowed for a tight offside. Viktor Gyökeres, who started the match in place of Havertz, was substituted after recording 12 touches, six completed passes, and zero shots. Arteta’s starting lineup also featured Mikel Merino as a No. 10 and Noni Madueke on the right wing, while Eze started on the left due to a muscular injury to Christos Tzolis. The result marks Arsenal's 14th consecutive Champions League group stage win and their ninth victory in 10 matches across all competitions this season.
The match was preceded by a tribute to Arsenal life president Ken Friar, who passed away at age 92. Arsenal now prepare for a Sunday fixture against Nottingham Forest before traveling to face Bayern Munich next week.
