Arsenal's Mikel Arteta is the only active manager to have won the league as the 2026-27 Premier League season begins without Klopp or Guardiola.
The 2026-27 Premier League season marks the first campaign in history without Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Jurgen Klopp, or Pep Guardiola on the touchline. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta enters the year as the only active coach in the division to have previously won the title, having secured the trophy just two months ago. The league landscape has shifted significantly following Mohamed Salah’s transfer to Trabzonspor in Türkiye. Salah leaves having won three PFA Player of the Year awards over the last decade, a total equal to the combined trophies held by the current player pool: Virgil van Dijk, Phil Foden, and Erling Haaland.
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland remains a defining figure following his World Cup performance, while Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is expected to receive the Player of the Year award for the previous season by the end of August. Fernandes will turn 32 in September. Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk turned 35 during the summer break. Phil Foden enters the year looking to reclaim a consistent starting role after failing to secure a permanent spot in the Manchester City lineup during the two most recent seasons.
Statistical Leaders and New Transfers
Manchester City and Arsenal dominated the summer transfer market with high-value acquisitions. City signed 23-year-old midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million. During his time at Forest, Anderson took 15% of his team's total touches, the highest share for any midfielder in the league. City also secured forward Antoine Semenyo, who scored 17 goals from 11 expected goals (xG) last season, and defender Marc Guéhi. Chelsea spent £117 million to acquire Morgan Rogers, who previously ranked in the 48th percentile for value added according to Futi ratings. Tottenham spent £92.5 million on 26-year-old Sandro Tonali, who sat in the 53rd percentile for value added.
In North London, Arsenal added midfielder Bruno Guimarães, potentially impacting the role of Martin Ødegaard. The Gunners also integrated Martín Zubimendi into a midfield that already features Jurriën Timber, who emerged as a top attacking fullback after returning from injury. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, aged 22, enters the season as one of the world's most aggressive creative passers despite a pass completion rate below 80% last term.
Futi Ratings and Youth Prospects
Chelsea’s 18-year-old attacking midfielder Estêvão enters the season ranked 50th overall after earning a 67 rating on the Futi 1-99 scale. This score placed him as the 37th-best player in the league last season despite playing only 900-plus minutes and suffering a severe hamstring tear. The Futi model, which utilizes regularized adjusted plus-minus to control for teammate quality and opponent difficulty, identifies Estêvão as above average in shooting, creating, buildup play, and winning the ball.
Defensive metrics highlight Tottenham’s new center-back duo of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi as the premier passing defenders in the competition. Senesi led the entire league in progressive passes while at Bournemouth. At the back, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez has conceded fewer goals than expected models predicted in each of the last four seasons. Brighton’s 23-year-old Bart Verbruggen is ranked 49th after his first elite shot-stopping campaign, while Arsenal’s David Raya is positioned at 48th due to his sweeper-keeper abilities.
Title Contenders and Tier Rankings
Liverpool’s roster features new additions Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, both of whom seek bounce-back years. Isak’s previous campaign was hampered by a broken ankle and a missed preseason. The squad also relies on Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch in central roles, alongside Cody Gakpo. Manchester City’s Nico O'Reilly and Chelsea’s Reece James represent the fullback/midfield hybrids essential to modern possession styles.
Manchester United’s attack now features Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who are credited with returning the club to competency. They are joined by Youri Tielemans in a tier of players who serve as starters for title-contending sides. At Chelsea, Enzo Fernández has transitioned from a deep-lying playmaker into a box-crashing midfielder, while Cole Palmer remains a top-20 talent despite recent injury struggles. The league remains restricted to established talent for now, as no players new to the Premier League were included in the preseason top 50 rankings.
