The 26-year-old pitcher currently holds a 6-4 record with a 5.83 ERA and has struck out 72 batters across 58⅔ innings of work this season.

Imai is in the first year of a three-year, $54 million contract with Houston, signed after he completed eight professional seasons in Japan. While he has shown flashes of dominance, including a May 25 performance where he threw six innings of a combined no-hitter against the Rangers, consistency has been an issue. The righty has failed to complete three innings in five of his 15 starts this year, and on three separate occasions, he has been pulled before the conclusion of the first inning.

Espada Outlines Relief Strategy

Joe Espada indicated that the move to the relief corps is intended to be temporary, specifically targeting the current three-game set. The manager noted that the coaching staff identified specific mechanical or approach issues during Imai's last start that they intend to rectify through this shift. Espada emphasized that the goal is to get the pitcher back into his role as an effective starter, citing that his "stuff is really good" when he is performing at his peak.
