Bears GM Ryan Poles Uncertain if CB Kyler Gordon Will Play Again

Chicago Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon will miss at least the first four games of the season after being placed on the reserve/PUP list due to a calf injury.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles stated Tuesday that he does not know if cornerback Kyler Gordon will play for the franchise again. Gordon, a 2022 second-round draft selection, remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as of the August roster cutdown to 53 players. Because he was placed on reserve/PUP, the defender is required to miss Chicago's first four regular-season contests. While he is eligible to return to practice on Sept. 21, Poles declined to provide a specific timetable for his recovery from a calf injury that sidelined him for the entirety of spring workouts and training camp.

Roster Moves and Rehabilitation Delays

The Bears officially placed Gordon on the PUP list on July 28. His absence throughout the summer was characterized by Poles as a "delay" in the rehabilitation process. Despite the uncertainty, Gordon has been present at Halas Hall to work with the team's training staff and was spotted on the sideline during the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns. Poles noted that some players utilize outside specialists in addition to team personnel, confirming that Gordon is indeed working, though the team has not seen the progression they desired. The general manager cited a failure to "get over that hump" regarding the discomfort associated with the recovery.

Financial Commitment and Recent History

Chicago signed Gordon to a three-year, $40 million contract extension during the previous offseason. However, the team has struggled to see a return on that investment due to persistent health issues. During the 2025 campaign, Gordon was limited to just five games, a total that included two playoff appearances. His season was interrupted by two separate stints on injured reserve. Poles acknowledged the shared frustrations between the organization and the player back in July, noting that the current situation involves pushing through physical discomfort that has slowed his return to football activities.

Defensive Adjustments and Depth Chart Changes

With Gordon sidelined, the Bears have relied on fourth-round rookie Malik Muhammad to fill the void at the nickel position. Muhammad took the majority of reps during training camp and is expected to start there for the season opener. The secondary depth also includes Clark Phillips III, who joined the roster via a trade with Atlanta. That transaction involved Chicago sending defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. to the Falcons in exchange for Phillips and a 2027 fifth-round draft pick.

Coaching Staff Perspectives

Head coach Ben Johnson has remained guarded regarding the cornerback's status. On Aug. 18, Johnson confirmed seeing Gordon rehabbing inside the facility and mentioned the existence of a specific plan for his return. Poles emphasized that while he maintains hope for Gordon's future, the player must continue to work hard to regain his playing form. The general manager reiterated that he lacks specifics on what caused the initial delay in the calf recovery, leaving Gordon's status for the remainder of the year in question as the Sept. 21 practice eligibility date approaches.
