Becky Sauerbrunn has joined the Portland Thorns as a technical consultant through the conclusion of the 2026 NWSL season, the club announced on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The two-time World Cup champion arrives to support head coach Robert Vilahamn’s staff with eight matches remaining in the regular season. Portland currently holds a record of 11-5-6 with 38 points, placing them seven points behind Gotham FC for the NWSL Shield and seven points ahead of Seattle Reign FC for the final playoff position. The Thorns defense has conceded 30 goals through 22 games this year.

Sauerbrunn, who retired from professional soccer in 2024, will focus on providing veteran mentorship and defensive expertise while participating in the team's video analysis process. During her four-year playing tenure in Portland starting in 2020, she secured both an NWSL Championship and an NWSL Shield. Her new role involves working directly with the backline and discussing tactics, tasks she noted would require significantly less running than her previous career on the pitch. Jeff Agoos, the Portland Thorns president and general manager of soccer operations, stated the move aims to position the club to compete for titles.

Prior to her time in Portland, Sauerbrunn established herself as a premier defender by winning consecutive NWSL Championships with FC Kansas City in 2014 and 2015. This technical appointment marks her first formal coaching-adjacent role since she began working in broadcasting and podcasting following her retirement.

The center-back earned 219 caps for the United States women's national team, participating in three World Cups and three Olympic Games. A significant highlight of her international tenure was anchoring the 2015 World Cup defense that maintained a 540-minute shutout streak, a feat that tied the tournament record set by Germany in 2007.
