The Buffalo Bills secured a 29-14 preseason victory over the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, marking the first game played at the new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium. During the contest, the Kentucky bluegrass surface showed visible signs of distress, including clumps of turf being churned up and a gray appearance in certain sections before kickoff. One official was forced to briefly stop the play clock to replace a displaced divot. Following the final whistle, groundskeeping crews immediately began re-seeding the most worn areas located between the hash marks.

Bills president Pete Guelli met with The Associated Press on Monday to address the condition of the playing surface. Guelli stated that team officials, including general manager Brandon Beane and various trainers, conducted a planned inspection of the field alongside the groundskeeping crew on Sunday. Despite the visual wear, Guelli emphasized that from a playability and safety perspective, everyone involved is very happy with the results. He noted that the foundation of the brand-new field will take time to strengthen and that the issues observed during the game are expected to dissipate as the root system matures.

Transition to Natural Grass

The move to the new open-air venue across the street from the team's former home included a significant switch from artificial turf to natural grass. Owner Terry Pegula supported the change, citing a personal preference for grass surfaces. This shift aligns with the preferences of the NFL Players Association, which has historically panned the Bills' previous artificial surface in annual polls. The new surface consists of Kentucky bluegrass provided by New Jersey-based Tuckahoe Turf Farms, the same vendor that sodded the Bills' practice field approximately ten years ago.

Andy Major, the Bills' senior vice president of venue operations, explained that the field was installed 10 months ago but requires more time to reach full stability. He noted that organic matter must build up under the roots over several years to provide better footing than a "virgin field" containing sand. To manage the growth, the grounds crew utilizes ventilation, heating, and grow-light systems, while comparing the current progress to historical data from the team's practice facility.

Maintenance and Upcoming Schedule

To preserve the integrity of the new lawn during its first year, the Bills have implemented strict usage restrictions. The organization elected against hosting any concerts at the stadium for the remainder of this year and will not host the regional high school football championships in November. These events are expected to return to the schedule next year once the turf has matured. The next significant challenge for the surface will be the arrival of winter weather, including Lake Erie snow and wind.

The team practiced at the stadium one week prior to the Panthers game and is scheduled for an open practice for fans on Tuesday morning. Buffalo will then host the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 27 for their preseason finale. The official regular-season home opener is set for September 17 against the Detroit Lions.

Stadium Infrastructure and Fan Feedback

Beyond the field conditions, the Bills are addressing feedback regarding the stadium's infrastructure. Social media criticism has targeted obstructed views caused by stairs and guardrails in certain seating sections. The team reported that less than 1% of season-ticket holders have filed complaints regarding these sightlines. Bills brass stated they are currently working to resolve these specific issues on a case-by-case basis as they prepare for the upcoming regular season schedule.
