The Houston Astros (66-67) have appointed 77-year-old Brent Strom as a consultant to address a pitching staff that currently ranks 25th in Major League Baseball with a 4.68 ERA. Strom, who previously served as the franchise's pitching coach from 2014 to 2021, will officially rejoin the club in uniform and in the dugout starting with Friday’s game against the New York Mets. The move comes as Houston enters Thursday having dropped 10 of its last 16 contests, maintaining a narrow half-game lead over Texas in the American League West.

Statistical struggles have defined the Houston rotation recently, as Astros starters have combined for a 5.17 ERA, the third-highest mark in the majors. Manager Joe Espada announced the hiring prior to the conclusion of a three-game series against the New York Yankees, noting that Strom will participate in daily meetings, video analysis, and the implementation of throwing programs. The veteran coach replaces no one on the current staff, as Joshua Miller continues his fifth season as the primary pitching coach.

A Legacy of World Series Success

Strom’s return follows a five-year absence from the organization he helped lead to three World Series appearances during his initial eight-season tenure. He originally departed Houston following the 2021 World Series loss to the Atlanta Braves. Espada described the 77-year-old former major league pitcher as one of the "architects" of the organization’s pitching philosophy, emphasizing the value of his perspective during the team's current push for a division title.

Following his first stint in Houston, Strom spent three seasons as the pitching coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks. During his tenure in Phoenix, the Diamondbacks reached the World Series in 2023. His most recent role was as an assistant pitching coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025, where he contributed to a staff that finished seventh in the big leagues with a 3.76 ERA.

Mentoring Cy Young Talent

During his single season in Pittsburgh, Strom helped develop ace Paul Skenes, who went on to win the 2025 National League Cy Young Award. Despite the pitching success, the Pirates finished the season with a 71-91 record, and Strom was not retained by the club. Now back in the American League, he is tasked with providing a "fresh set of eyes" for a Houston group that has struggled for consistency throughout the 2026 campaign.

Tactical Integration in the Dugout

As a consultant, Strom will be fully integrated into the game-day environment, wearing a uniform and maintaining a presence in the dugout. His responsibilities extend beyond the bench to include technical oversight of the team's analytical and physical preparation. The Astros hope his experience will stabilize a staff that has faltered during the late-August stretch, as the club fights to remain atop the American League West standings despite their sub-.500 record of 66-67.
