Sean Payton returned to playcalling duties as the Denver Broncos defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 23-17 on Sunday.
The Denver Broncos improved to a 3-2 record with a 23-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. In his first game since reclaiming playcalling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb, head coach Sean Payton oversaw an offense that produced 224 net yards, the team's second-lowest output of the season. Denver converted just 1-of-12 third-down attempts and trailed 17-10 entering the fourth quarter before scoring 13 unanswered points to secure the win.
Quarterback Bo Nix finished with 123 passing yards, the second-lowest total of his career. Payton emphasized a balanced attack, resulting in 29 rushing carries against 27 pass attempts. Despite the offensive struggles, the Broncos' defense generated four key turnovers in Chargers territory to set up scoring drives. In the final period, Denver forced a turnover on downs at the Los Angeles 41-yard line, intercepted Justin Herbert at the 34, and recovered a Herbert fumble at the 23-yard line.
Payton announced the decision to replace Webb as the primary caller on Thursday, following a Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to Sunday, the Broncos offense ranked 27th in scoring and total yards per game, and 29th in rushing yards. The winless Chargers fell further in the standings as Denver capitalized on short fields provided by three fourth-quarter takeaways.
