Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken announced Monday that rookie quarterback Taylen Green may be utilized in a specific package of plays to leverage his athleticism during game days. The Browns are scheduled to open their season on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday. Green, a 6-foot-5, 227-pound athlete, joined the 53-man roster as the third-string quarterback after Dillon Gabriel was moved to injured reserve with a back injury.

Green earned his roster spot following a preseason finale against the New England Patriots where he completed 5 of 7 passes for 27 yards and led all runners with 66 rushing yards on eight carries. During the NFL scouting combine in February, the sixth-round pick recorded a 4.36-second 40-yard dash, the fastest time for a quarterback since 2003. He also led his position with a 43½-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot, 2-inch broad jump.

Despite the potential for a specialized role, Monken noted that activating three quarterbacks—including starter Deshaun Watson and backup Shedeur Sanders—presents a challenge on game days. Watson was named the starter on Aug. 24, while Sanders, a fifth-round selection, serves as the primary backup. Green and Sanders are currently expected to split practice repetitions as scout-team quarterbacks to further their development.
