The Washington Capitals have signed 2024 second-round pick Cole Hutson to a three-year entry-level deal following his historic freshman season at Boston University.
The Washington Capitals officially signed defenseman Cole Hutson to a three-year entry-level contract on Thursday, with the agreement set to begin during the 2024-25 NHL season. Selected 43rd overall in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft, the 18-year-old blueliner joins the professional ranks after a prolific single season at Boston University. His new deal carries an average annual value of $975,000 at the NHL level, solidifying his place in the organization’s long-term defensive plans. This signing follows a collegiate campaign where the North Barrington, Illinois native established himself as one of the premier offensive defenders in the NCAA.
During his lone season with the Terriers, the 5’10”, 165-pound defenseman appeared in 38 games, tallying 15 goals and 36 assists for a total of 51 points. These statistics placed him second among all Division I defensemen in scoring, trailing only his older brother, Lane Hutson. His 51-point output broke the long-standing record for the most points by a freshman defenseman in Boston University history, a mark previously held by Vic Stanfield since the 1972-73 season. Hutson’s playmaking ability was on full display throughout the Hockey East schedule, where he earned a spot on the All-Hockey East Second Team and the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.
Prior to his arrival in Boston, Hutson spent two seasons with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), where he rewrote the record books for blueliners. He concluded his tenure with the U.S. National U18 Team as the all-time leading scorer among defensemen in program history, amassing 119 points in 112 career games. This total surpassed the previous record of 111 points held by current NHL star Adam Fox. In his final year with the NTDP in 2023-24, he recorded 51 points in 51 games, maintaining a point-per-game average that attracted significant attention from scouts ahead of the draft in Las Vegas.
On the international stage, the left-handed shooter has been a cornerstone for Team USA in various age-group competitions. At the 2024 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, he led all defensemen in scoring with 13 points in seven games, including four goals and nine assists. His performance earned him the tournament’s Best Directorate Award for Best Defenseman and a selection to the Media All-Star Team while helping the United States secure a silver medal. This followed a gold-medal performance in 2023, where he contributed 12 points in seven contests as an underaged player, proving his ability to produce against elite global competition.
Washington’s decision to secure the Cole Hutson Capitals contract now allows the prospect to participate in upcoming development camps and potentially join the Hershey Bears for a professional stint if the timing aligns with his developmental curve. The Capitals have emphasized mobility and puck-moving capabilities in their recent recruitment, and Hutson fits this mold perfectly with his elite skating edges and vision. His transition to the professional level marks the next phase for a player who has consistently outperformed his age group at every developmental tier. The organization expects him to be a primary driver of offense from the back end as they transition their roster toward a younger core.
