The 33-year-old World Cup winner will move to Stamford Bridge on a two-year contract, ending a six-season tenure at Villa Park. The transfer accelerated after representatives for the goalkeeper offered his services to the London club on Wednesday. Martínez, who was a runner-up to Spain at the most recent summer tournament, is expected to take over the starting role following Robert Sánchez’s recent struggles.

Scrutiny on the goalkeeping position intensified after Chelsea’s 3-2 victory against Fulham on Monday. During that match, Sánchez was at fault for a goal when he allowed a tame shot from Josh King to squeeze through his grasp. While the club previously looked to 19-year-old Belgian Mike Penders as a potential challenger, the decision was made to recruit an established Premier League veteran. Penders, who spent last term on loan at Strasbourg, made his first-team debut during Thursday’s Carabao Cup fixture against Luton.

Villa Squad Overhaul and Financial Details

Martínez originally joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020 for a fee of £17 million. By selling him for £7.5 million now, Villa continues a summer strategy of lowering the average age of their roster. The Birmingham club had already prepared for this exit by signing Japan international Zion Suzuki earlier in the transfer window. A previous attempt to sell Martínez to Juventus collapsed earlier in August, but the deal with Chelsea moved quickly once negotiations began.
