Manager Enzo Maresca indicated during a Friday news conference that the Premier League champions are unlikely to finalize a deal for the midfielder before the west London club’s cutoff point. Chelsea remains adamant that no offers for the player will be considered once the specified time expires.

Maresca declined to comment directly on the specifics of the negotiations, stating it is not correct to speak about players from other clubs. When questioned about potential incoming transfer business for the day, the manager clarified that he did not expect any transactions to occur. The pursuit of Fernández comes as City manages a significant overhaul of their midfield roster following the departure of Bernardo Silva.

Midfield Roster Changes and Reijnders Exit

City has already invested £116 million to acquire England international Elliot Anderson. Simultaneously, Tijjani Reijnders is on the verge of a £51 million move to Al Qadsiah. Reijnders, who joined City from AC Milan for £46.5 million just last summer, saw his involvement diminish during the second half of the previous campaign, starting only 50% of the club's Premier League fixtures. Maresca noted that the player's desire for more consistent playing time drove the decision, comparing the situation to that of James Trafford.

Rodri returned to the Manchester City training facility on Friday, marking the final player to report for preseason duties. The Spain midfielder underwent back surgery after contributing to a World Cup victory this summer. Although Maresca greeted the Ballon d’Or winner with a hug upon his arrival, the manager offered no definitive guarantees regarding the player's future at the club. Rodri is currently entering the final year of his contract, and while City previously rejected offers from Barcelona, the Spanish side is expected to submit an improved bid.

Community Shield Preparations and Haaland Fitness

Manchester City is currently preparing for the Community Shield match against Arsenal, scheduled to take place this Sunday in Cardiff. During an open training session on Thursday, striker Erling Haaland was unable to complete the final portion of the drills. However, Maresca dismissed major injury concerns, attributing the issue to a minor problem behind the player's heels. The manager confirmed that the Norwegian forward is otherwise okay for the upcoming fixture.

He acknowledged that while he has seen Rodri in the building and noted the player looks good, the club will take time to evaluate the situation further.
