Simultaneously, reports from The Athletic and the BBC indicate Chelsea are targeting 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson. The former Liverpool captain, who was a member of England’s most recent World Cup squad, currently plays for Brentford. Henderson made 34 appearances for the Bees last season, though his tenure included a broken arm sustained while falling over advertising hoardings during a celebration of England's victory against Mexico. Despite having one year left on his deal, Brentford are reportedly prepared to allow the veteran to depart on a free transfer.

The pursuit of Welbeck places the futures of Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson in immediate doubt. Delap, a former Manchester City academy player, joined Chelsea from Ipswich a year ago in a £30 million ($40m) transfer.
