Chiefs Acquire Justin Fields for 2027 Sixth-Round Pick to Backup Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a Justin Fields trade with the New York Jets in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round draft selection.

The Kansas City Chiefs finalized a Justin Fields trade on Monday, sending a 2027 sixth-round draft pick to the New York Jets to acquire the 27-year-old quarterback. Pending a physical, Fields joins a roster where the Jets are subsidizing $7 million of his $10 million guaranteed 2026 salary. Kansas City is responsible for the remaining $3 million. This transaction follows the Jets' recent acquisition of Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders, a move that saw New York pay $3.3 million of Smith's salary while the Raiders covered $16.2 million. Fields, who holds a 16-37 career record as a starter, requested the move to Kansas City despite interest from multiple other franchises.

Fields arrives in Missouri following a difficult 3-14 season in New York where he went 2-7 as a starter. During that tenure, he ranked 31st out of 36 qualifying passers with a 37.3 Total QBR. His statistical output included 1,259 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception across the season. Notably, his production dipped to 505 total yards over his final five starts before being benched on Nov. 17. Following his demotion, a knee ailment placed him on injured reserve, effectively ending his time as the primary option for coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. The Jets had originally signed him to a two-year, $40 million free-agent contract with $30 million in total guarantees.

Mahomes Injury Status and Offseason Depth

Head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will integrate Fields into the system while Patrick Mahomes continues his recovery. Mahomes, a nine-year veteran, underwent surgery in December to repair torn ACL and LCL ligaments in his left knee. This represents the most significant physical setback of his career since joining the league in 2017. While Mahomes expressed a goal in January to be available for the season opener without restrictions, his participation in OTAs remains uncertain. Athletic trainer Julie Frymyer is overseeing his rehabilitation, which currently involves seven-hour daily sessions at the team facility.

Prior to the Justin Fields trade, the Chiefs' depth chart behind Mahomes consisted of Chris Oladokun and Jake Haener. These two players have combined for only three career starts. The vacancy at the backup position was created last week when veteran Gardner Minshew signed a contract with the Arizona Cardinals. Fields is expected to handle the majority of first-team repetitions during the offseason program and training camp to ensure the offense remains operational if Mahomes is not cleared for the start of the 2026 campaign.

Tactical Shift and Jets Roster Overhaul

Fields' departure from New York was precipitated by the arrival of Geno Smith, who is slated to be the Jets' starter in 2026. The Jets' quarterback room now features Smith alongside Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe. Owner Woody Johnson had been vocal about the team's struggles under Fields, specifically citing an 0-7 start to the season and criticizing the quarterback's efficiency. Johnson noted in October that it was difficult to win with Fields' specific passer rating, suggesting that the team simply needed to complete more passes to be competitive.

Despite the external pressure, Fields recorded his most productive outing in Week 8, throwing for 244 yards during a comeback victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. He remained the starter during that period only because backup Tyrod Taylor was sidelined with a knee injury. However, the momentum did not last, and the Jets eventually pivoted away from the former 2021 first-round pick. Kansas City represents Fields' fourth team in four seasons, as the organization bets on Andy Reid’s ability to maximize the mobile quarterback’s physical tools while Mahomes heals from his reconstructive knee surgery.
