Chiefs Hand Broncos 31-10 Loss in Arrowhead Stadium Opener

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos 31-10 on Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium. Running back Kenneth Walker III led the Chiefs' offense with a career-high 173 rushing yards on 23 carries, averaging 7.5 yards per attempt, including a 60-yard touchdown run. Kansas City finished with 220 total rushing yards, the highest total surrendered by Denver since Week 5 of the 2024 season.

Denver quarterback Bo Nix completed his season debut with one interception and three fumbles, losing one. Nix was sacked four times, tying a career high, and the Broncos offense was limited to 176 net yards without a single play exceeding 20 yards. The unit struggled under first-year play-caller Davis Webb, recording only six rushing attempts in the first half and finishing with seven total penalties.

A key momentum shift occurred in the third quarter when Broncos safety Brandon Jones intercepted Patrick Mahomes and returned the ball to the Chiefs' 5-yard line. Despite the field position, Denver lost eight yards over the ensuing four plays and settled for a field goal. The Broncos' only touchdown of the night came on their second possession of the game to briefly tie the score at 7-7.

Coach Sean Payton noted the imbalance in the offensive approach, citing a lack of rushing attempts and poor third-down execution. The Broncos defense struggled with missed tackles, allowing Walker to become the first back to exceed 70 yards against them since the 2025 season. Denver now faces a short week before hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
