Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf labeled Gonzalez an elite player and a priority for the organization during a Tuesday press conference. Wolf noted that while the team has not established a firm deadline to finalize the deal, discussions with representation have gained momentum. Team owner Robert Kraft previously stated in late July that the franchise offered a package that would make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, a status Wolf confirmed remains on the table.

Gonzalez is represented by agent Reggie Johnson, who recently secured a four-year, $132 million extension for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon on August 15. While the Patriots' offer aims for the top of the market, Gonzalez noted that his team knows exactly what they want and that certain complexities go into the final language of a contract. The veteran defender, who skipped the majority of the voluntary offseason program, had previously stated during mandatory minicamp on June 9 that he hoped to be rewarded as a Patriot.

The third-year cornerback returned to the practice field Monday after a multi-week absence. Gonzalez had been a full participant in training camp until August 10, when he landed hard in the end zone and appeared to sustain an injury. This physical setback resulted in him missing joint practice sessions with both the Indianapolis Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles.
