Christian Gonzalez agreed to a four-year, $135 million extension with the Patriots, featuring a position-record $33 million signing bonus.
The New England Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed to terms on a four-year, $135 million contract extension on Monday night, according to sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. The deal establishes Gonzalez as the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, surpassing the $132 million extension signed by Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon last month. The agreement includes $102 million in total guarantees and a $33 million signing bonus, which NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported as the largest ever for the position.
Gonzalez, the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was scheduled to earn base salaries of $2.259 million in 2026 and $18.11 million in 2027 under his previous contract. The 24-year-old All-Pro has started 34 regular-season games and four postseason contests, recording four career interceptions. His resume includes a late-game interception in an AFC Championship victory over the Denver Broncos and a three-pass-defensed performance in Super Bowl LX.
Negotiations for the new deal intensified less than 48 hours before the Patriots' regular-season opener against the Seahawks. Gonzalez had previously expressed frustration with the pace of talks on Aug. 25 after participating only in low-tempo drills during mandatory minicamp. He also missed time during training camp this year due to a lower leg injury sustained on Aug. 10, though he returned to practice on Aug. 24.
Under the leadership of coach Mike Vrabel and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, the team prioritized retaining the defender, who missed 13 games as a rookie with a torn labrum and three games in 2025 with a hamstring injury. Gonzalez is expected to start alongside veteran Carlton Davis III in Wednesday's rematch of Super Bowl LX.
