The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Chicago White Sox 9-3 on Wednesday at Chicago, staving off elimination in the American League Division Series. Cleveland recorded 11 hits, including two triples in a postseason game for the first time in franchise history. Jo Adell provided a three-run triple in the third inning to establish a 4-1 lead, while Jose Ramirez added a two-run triple in the eighth to drive in Travis Bazzana and Patrick Bailey. Adell, Ramirez, Bailey, and Brayan Rocchio each finished the contest with two hits.
Chicago took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kyle Teel hit an RBI double off Cleveland starter Daniel Espino. However, the White Sox offense struggled thereafter, striking out 19 times and finishing 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Reliever Foster Griffin set a White Sox franchise record for a relief pitcher by striking out seven batters across 2⅔ innings, allowing one run on two hits. Bryan Hudson took the loss after allowing Cleveland's third-inning rally, which began with a Bazzana walk and a Steven Kwan RBI single.
Jose Ramirez, playing in his 48th career postseason game, also doubled and stole third in the fifth inning before scoring on a Chase DeLauter grounder. The Guardians' offensive output followed a two-game stretch where they managed only three runs and seven hits combined. The series continues with Game 4 on Thursday, where Cleveland will start left-hander Parker Messick. Messick posted a 12-9 record with a 2.56 ERA during the regular season and allowed two runs over 4⅓ innings in the series opener.
