The Indianapolis Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard on Monday, one day after the team surrendered a 13-point halftime lead in a loss to the Tennessee Titans. The defeat dropped Indianapolis to a 2-4 record and followed a game where fans at Lucas Oil Stadium chanted for Ballard's dismissal. Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon announced the move in a statement, noting that a change in leadership is necessary to meet the organization's standard for competing for championships.
Ballard had served as general manager since 2017 and was in the final year of his contract. During his nine-plus seasons at the helm, the franchise reached the postseason twice and secured four winning records. His tenure began with a 4-12 season in 2017 while quarterback Andrew Luck was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Although Luck returned to lead the team to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth in 2018, his sudden retirement the following August initiated a period where the front office struggled to secure a long-term replacement at the position.
Irsay-Gordon described the midseason firing as a deliberate decision intended to prevent delays in beginning a thorough search for a new leader. Despite the vacancy in the front office, the owner stated that the team's goals for the current season remain unchanged. The organization has not yet named a successor but plans to take the time required to identify a permanent replacement for the future.
