OXNARD, Calif. -- Coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Tyler Guyton has taken over all first-team repetitions at left tackle, ending a planned rotation with Nate Thomas after just one padded practice. The 2024 first-round pick is now positioned as the primary blindside protector for quarterback Dak Prescott. While the original training camp strategy involved alternating Guyton and Thomas every four days, the coaching staff opted to install Guyton permanently based on his early performance and a lack of consistency from his primary competitor.

Guyton enters this role having started 21 of the 25 games he played during his first two seasons. Despite his high usage rate when active, the tackle has struggled with availability, missing the final seven games of the previous season due to a high ankle sprain. The coach highlighted that the player’s pass sets have remained compact and controlled, preventing him from oversetting while maintaining effective leverage. Guyton has also received praise for his hand usage, with Schottenheimer describing his punches as good throughout the early stages of camp.

Nate Thomas, a 2024 sixth-round selection, remains the secondary option at the position. Thomas started four games last season and demonstrated versatility by logging snaps at both tackle spots. However, Schottenheimer stated that Thomas needs to show more consistent play to push for the starting role again, challenging the young lineman to respond to the depth chart adjustment.

The decision to halt the competition was influenced by the coaching staff's desire to build confidence in the rookie first-rounder. Schottenheimer emphasized that while the team retains the right to adjust the lineup, Guyton will remain with the starters for the foreseeable future.
