Inter Miami head coach Cristian González confirmed Lionel Messi's international retirement ahead of the club's Saturday night fixture against D.C. United.
Inter Miami head coach Cristian "Kily" González confirmed on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, that captain Lionel Messi has retired from international soccer with Argentina. The 39-year-old forward returns to MLS action as the Herons sit in third place in the Eastern Conference with 46 points through 27 matches. Despite a recent five-match winless streak in league play consisting of one loss and four draws, the club recently secured a 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup on Sept. 16.
González described Messi's farewell match as "incredibly intense" and noted the player's continued competitive drive during training sessions at the club. The coach emphasized that Messi’s presence has altered the club's daily standards, requiring teammates and staff to provide 100% effort. The manager noted that while Messi will no longer wear the Argentina jersey, he remains focused on new challenges within the MLS environment.
Inter Miami prepares to host D.C. United on Saturday night at Nu Stadium, marking their first game following the international break. González indicated that players returning from national team duty are available for selection as the team aims to improve its defensive transitions. Following the weekend fixture, the Herons are scheduled to host New York City FC at Nu Stadium on Oct. 14.
