Cristiano Ronaldo issued a public apology to his teammates after walking out on the national team following a 2-1 victory against Norway on September 27.

Cristiano Ronaldo released a five-page letter via social media and ESPN explaining his departure from the Portugal national team camp following a 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory against Norway on September 27. The 41-year-old Al Nassr striker, who holds a record 146 goals in 234 international appearances, apologized to his teammates for leaving the camp prematurely but stated he remains available for future selection if physically fit. Ronaldo characterized his exit as a response to coach Jorge Jesus breaking his word twice, first by failing to sub him on after a pre-match agreement and later through aggressive comments made during a September 29 press conference.

According to the letter, Jesus originally requested Ronaldo be prepared to play 30 minutes against Norway despite a prior agreement that he would sit out for physical recovery. Ronaldo warmed up from halftime but remained an unused substitute throughout the match. The forward claimed a plan was established to address the situation publicly before a game against Denmark, but he alleged Jesus abandoned the agreed-upon tone in favor of an "I want, I can, and I command" attitude. Ronaldo acknowledged that as team captain, his decision to pack his bags and leave should be punished by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) without mitigating circumstances.

Portugal won all four of their Nations League matches during the recent international break and is scheduled to face Denmark and Wales in November. FPF president Pedro Proença previously convinced Ronaldo to continue his international career following the summer World Cup exit. While Ronaldo mentioned the possibility of future farewell matches, he emphasized his current focus remains on competing for the national team. Coach Jorge Jesus has stated the door remains open for the striker's return ahead of the 2028 European Championships in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
