Cristiano Ronaldo left the Portugal national team on Wednesday after coach Jorge Jesus announced plans to bench the 41-year-old for Thursday's match against Denmark.
Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed his departure from the Portugal national team training camp on Wednesday via Instagram, one day before a UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark in Copenhagen. The 41-year-old striker, who holds the men's international record with 146 goals, made the decision following a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and coach Jorge Jesus.
Coach Jorge Jesus stated during a pregame press conference that he did not plan to start Ronaldo on Thursday, naming Gonçalo Ramos as the intended starter instead. Ronaldo did not feature in Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday and had not trained with the squad since that match. While Jesus acknowledged it was a mistake to have Ronaldo warm up without using him against Norway, he denied reports of a feud, asserting that the player agreed to abide by coaching decisions.
Portugal currently leads Nations League Group A4 with six points from two matches. The national federation confirmed the squad will proceed with its remaining 24 players for the upcoming matches against Denmark and a second meeting with Norway on Sunday. Ronaldo, who was substituted in the 67th minute of a 1-0 win over Wales last Thursday, stated he would explain the specific reasons for his exit in due course.
