Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson will miss at least four weeks of action following a Grade 2 left oblique strain, manager Craig Counsell announced Monday. The 32-year-old infielder exited Sunday’s 11-4 defeat against the St. Louis Cardinals during the bottom of the third inning after experiencing discomfort on an awkward swing-and-miss. Before the injury, Swanson was batting .216 with 18 home runs and 66 RBIs while occupying a lower spot in the Chicago batting order. The two-time Gold Glove winner (2022, 2023) is expected to miss the majority of the remaining regular season, though the club anticipates his return for postseason play.
In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs placed starting pitcher Edward Cabrera on the 15-day injured list due to a recurring blister on his middle finger. Cabrera’s placement follows a difficult outing against the Cardinals where he surrendered seven runs across 3⅔ innings. This performance resulted in a 5.68 ERA for the right-hander, who had just returned from a stint on the IL for a hamstring strain. Manager Craig Counsell indicated that Cabrera may transition to the bullpen upon his return as the team seeks answers for his persistent blister issues.
Infield Adjustments and Roster Shuffles
Nico Hoerner has shifted from second base to shortstop to fill the void left by Swanson. Rookie Pedro Ramirez will take over starting duties at second base, while the team also promoted versatile infielder Owen Miller from the minors to provide additional depth. To facilitate these changes, the Cubs optioned infielder James Triantos to Triple-A Iowa. Further reinforcements are expected soon as second-year player Matt Shaw is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment this Wednesday following a wrist injury.
To round out the active roster, the Cubs recalled pitcher Javier Assad and outfielder Kevin Alcantara. These moves come as Chicago (72-53) enters Monday trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by five games in the National League Central. Despite the divisional deficit, the club currently maintains a firm hold on the top wild-card spot in the National League.
Pitching Staff Concerns and Recovery Timelines
Regarding the Dansby Swanson injury, Counsell noted that the shortstop is ready to attack his rehabilitation to expedite his return to the field. The manager expressed less certainty regarding the pitching staff, stating he does not know when Edward Cabrera will pitch next despite the blister not being considered a serious long-term issue. The team is evaluating whether the length of Cabrera's outings contributes to the skin irritation on his throwing hand.
Swanson’s absence removes a significant defensive presence from the diamond, as he has been a perennial contender for fielding honors over the last three seasons. The Cubs' ability to maintain their 19-game-over-.500 record will rely on the newly formed middle infield pairing of Hoerner and Ramirez until Swanson or Shaw can return to the major league lineup. The current timeline suggests Swanson could be back in late September, just as the regular season concludes.
