Derek Jeter and 2001 Yankees Reunite for 25th Anniversary 9/11 Tribute

Derek Jeter joined members of the 2001 Yankees team to honor victims of the Sept. 11 attacks during a pregame ceremony at Yankee Stadium.

Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Joe Torre returned to Yankee Stadium on Friday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The pregame ceremony took place before the New York Yankees hosted the New York Mets to begin a three-game series. The event concluded with ceremonial first pitches from Brielle Saracini and Sean McGuire, a married couple whose fathers both died in the 2001 attacks.

Victor Saracini was the captain of United Flight 175, which hit the South Tower, while Patrick McGuire was working on the 84th floor of the same building. Brielle Saracini, who was 10 years old at the time of the tragedy, initiated a 25-year friendship with Jeter after writing him a letter three days after her father's death. Jeter subsequently invited the family to a game and later supported Saracini through a cancer diagnosis by providing personal messages of encouragement.

Jeter and his former teammates reflected on the role of the 2001 team, which reached the World Series that fall. Manager Aaron Boone, who played for the Cincinnati Reds in 2001, described the Friday night ceremony as a significant honor. Saracini and McGuire, who met two years after the attacks at Camp Better Days, have been married since Sept. 9, 2017.
