The Arizona Diamondbacks designated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment prior to Sunday's game against the Texas Rangers.

The Arizona Diamondbacks designated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment prior to Sunday's game against the Texas Rangers. To fill the roster vacancy, the club recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from Triple-A Reno. Gurriel, 32, struggled following his return from a torn ACL on April 18, batting .210 with two home runs and 22 RBIs across 51 games this season.

Manager Torey Lovullo cited a lack of consistency in Gurriel's at-bats as the primary reason for the move. The Cuban outfielder is currently in the final guaranteed year of a three-year, $42 million contract. Should he be released, Arizona remains responsible for a $5 million buyout tied to a $14 million team option for the 2027 season.

Gurriel spent four seasons in Arizona and earned an All-Star selection in 2023 during the team's run to the World Series. Over a nine-year MLB career that included five seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, he has maintained a .271 lifetime batting average.
