The 26-year-old defender was filmed by Sky Sport Italy arriving at the airport, where he told onlookers "Forza Inter" ahead of his medical and the expected signing of a five-year contract. This move follows a summer where Inter sought a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who departed the San Siro for Real Madrid.

The England international leaves Tottenham Hotspur after four years in North London, a tenure that included 85 total appearances and a Europa League winners' medal. Despite his recent breakout performance at the World Cup, Spence faced limited prospects for the 2026-27 campaign under Roberto De Zerbi. Spurs solidified their defensive options in June by signing Pedro Porro to a new contract and recruiting Andy Robertson to provide cover at left-back, prompting the club to green-light Spence's exit.

Transfer Financials and Tottenham History

Tottenham originally signed the former Fulham youngster from Middlesbrough in July 2022. That initial deal was worth £19 million ($25.6 million) and featured various add-ons triggered by his international performances. Although he joined in 2022, Spence waited two years to make his full debut for the club. His path to the first team was interrupted by three separate loan spells at Stade Rennais, Leeds United, and Genoa.

Ange Postecoglou eventually integrated the versatile fullback into the squad during the 2024-25 season. During the most recent 2025-26 campaign, Spence played 44 times for a Tottenham side that struggled significantly, only securing their safety from relegation on the final day of the season. The agreed €40 million deal for defender Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid further signals the mass change occurring within the Spurs roster this summer.

Return to Serie A and Tactical Role

This transfer marks Spence’s second stint in Italian football. He previously spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2024, providing him with existing experience in Serie A. Inter Milan identified the wing-back as a primary target following his excellent World Cup showing, viewing him as the direct successor to the vacancy left by Dumfries on the right flank.

Negotiations between the two clubs were first reported by ESPN on Wednesday, leading to his arrival in Italy less than 48 hours later. The move allows Spence to seek a new challenge after a difficult domestic season where he was a frequent starter during the club's fight against the drop. He now joins an Inter side looking to bolster their wide options with a player who has proven his durability across 44 matches in a single English top-flight season.
