Dodgers Land Tarik Skubal for Three Prospects in Deadline Blockbuster

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired reigning two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith.

The Los Angeles Dodgers finalized a trade on Saturday night to acquire left-handed ace Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. In exchange for the reigning back-to-back American League Cy Young Award winner, Los Angeles sent outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan, and right-hander Brady Smith to Detroit. Skubal joins the first-place Dodgers carrying a 2.79 ERA across 16 starts this season, having recorded 116 strikeouts and 14 walks in 96⅔ innings of work. The 29-year-old southpaw, who earned a $32 million salary this year via arbitration, posted a 2.03 ERA during the month of July.

Statistical Dominance and Pitching Depth

Skubal’s recent track record includes a 31-10 record from 2024 to 2025, a span in which he maintained a 2.30 ERA and fanned 469 batters over 387⅓ innings. His 12.6 FanGraphs wins above replacement (fWAR) during that period led all major league pitchers. On Wednesday night, in his final appearance for Detroit, Skubal recorded his 1,000th career strikeout during a game where the Tigers surrendered a 7-0 lead to the Baltimore Orioles. Despite missing six weeks earlier this season due to bone chips in his left elbow—treated with a NanoScope procedure in late April—Skubal is slated to serve as the Dodgers' Game 1 starter.

Los Angeles integrates Skubal into a rotation that features Yoshinobu Yamamoto and several players nearing returns from the injured list. Tyler Glasnow has been sidelined since May 6 with back spasms but is scheduled for a minor league rehab assignment next week. Blake Snell, who has made only one start this season, is expected back after one additional rehab outing. Shohei Ohtani continues to manage a sore left knee, though Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman stated he expects Ohtani to pitch this October.

Detroit Receives Three-Prospect Package

To secure the pending free agent, the Dodgers parted with two top-50 prospects. Zyhir Hope, a 21-year-old outfielder, was slashing .293/.369/.530 with 23 home runs and 18 stolen bases at the Double-A level prior to the deal. River Ryan, 27, owns a 1.33 career MLB ERA in four starts and was ranked 49th on ESPN’s midseason top 50 list. Although Ryan has been out since mid-June with a hamstring injury and holds a 4.46 ERA in eight Triple-A starts this year, he remains a high-upside arm. The third piece, 21-year-old Brady Smith, was a 2023 third-round pick who posted a 3.88 ERA in 19 Class-A starts this season.

Tigers' Season Shift and Trade Market

Detroit entered the trade market after falling seven games below .500 and three games out of a wild-card spot. By the end of May, the Tigers were tied with the Colorado Rockies for the worst record in MLB before a brief mid-summer surge where they won 28 of 46 games. However, momentum stalled following back-to-back losses to the last-place Kansas City Royals. While the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Rays all expressed interest in Skubal, the Dodgers emerged as the successful suitor.

Skubal, a former ninth-round pick in the 2018 draft, expressed his gratitude for the Tigers organization at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento shortly after being informed of the move. He joins a Los Angeles roster that already added Edwin Diaz and Kyle Tucker this offseason and currently holds the highest run differential in the major leagues. The Dodgers are attempting to become the first team in National League history to win three consecutive World Series titles.
