Drake Maye completed 23 of 33 passes for 178 yards but threw three fourth-quarter interceptions in a 13-10 loss to Seattle.
According to ESPN, the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 13-10 on Wednesday night after quarterback Drake Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter. Maye finished the season opener completing 23 of 33 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown. Despite New England holding a 10-0 lead early in the third quarter, Seattle scored 10 points in the final period off Maye’s first two turnovers: a deep pass intended for Romeo Doubs and a throw to Pop Douglas on third-and-14.
The Seahawks played most of the contest without starting quarterback Sam Darnold, who exited in the first quarter with a hip injury. New England had an opportunity to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, reaching the Seattle 16-yard line with 26 seconds remaining. However, on third-and-5, Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe intercepted Maye’s pass intended for Mack Hollins in the right side of the end zone, preventing a field goal attempt by Andy Borregales.
Maye is only the second quarterback in 25 seasons to record three interceptions in the fourth quarter of a season-opening game, joining Baker Mayfield. Following the loss, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel expressed continued confidence in the quarterback, noting the team intends to remain aggressive. The performance marked a shift for Maye, who had only one multi-interception game during the previous season.
