Philadelphia will keep Lane Johnson on the 53-man roster through the season to delay cap hits until 2028 following his abrupt retirement.
The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to keep offensive tackle Lane Johnson on their 53-man roster for the remainder of the season despite his abrupt retirement. According to NFL Network, the team intends to wait until after June 1 to move him to the reserve/retired list, a move designed to prevent a major salary cap acceleration until 2028. Johnson, who received a $21.7 million option bonus before the season, currently occupies a roster spot with a $1.3 million base salary.
This roster management follows a week of significant changes to the Philadelphia offensive line, including the trade of two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens. In exchange for Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick, the Eagles received a 2027 fifth-rounder and a 2028 second-round selection. The team also released quarterback Andy Dalton on Friday to address a roster crunch caused by various injuries.
Financial negotiations regarding Johnson’s retirement are ongoing between the NFLPA and the NFL management council. The veteran tackle is expected to pay back several million dollars of his bonus, though the exact figure remains undetermined. Beyond the cap implications, keeping Johnson on the active roster maintains a window for his return in the event he decides to unretire. Sources indicate that despite these moves, general manager Howie Roseman is not initiating a full sell-off and may use the newly acquired 2028 second-round pick to bolster the current roster.
