Sixth-ranked Ukrainian Elina Svitolina announced the end of her marriage to Gael Monfils in an Instagram post on Monday.
Elina Svitolina announced the end of her marriage to fellow tennis player Gael Monfils via an Instagram post on Monday. The sixth-ranked Ukrainian stated that while their marriage is ending, the pair will continue to co-parent their 4-year-old daughter, Skai. Svitolina noted that she needs to find her way back to herself and that she could not do so within the union.
Gael Monfils, a former world No. 6, has officially retired from professional tennis as of Oct. 5. While the 40-year-old was expected to conclude his career at the Paris Masters starting Oct. 31, he is now listed as retired by the sport's drug-testing organization. Associated Press reports that the marital split may have influenced Monfils' decision to end his career earlier than his original plan to retire at the end of the season.
Svitolina previously credited Monfils for his support during her break from the sport to cope with the emotional impact of the war in Ukraine. She described the announcement as the most difficult thing she has ever shared, emphasizing that their family remains intact despite the legal dissolution of the marriage.
