Three-time MLB All-Star Mark Teixeira won election to the U.S. House in Texas's 21st Congressional District on Tuesday.
Republican Mark Teixeira won election to the U.S. House in Texas's 21st Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Kristin Hook. Teixeira, a former slugger for the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, secured the seat vacated by Republican Rep. Chip Roy. The victory follows a March primary where the former athlete received more than 61% of the vote.
Teixeira's 14-season Major League Baseball career included five Gold Gloves, three Silver Sluggers, and a 2009 World Series championship. The No. 5 overall pick in the 2001 MLB draft retired from baseball and moved his family back to Texas in 2021. His campaign for the conservative district west of Austin and San Antonio focused on border security and ending specific educational policies.
In other Tuesday contests, former college football coach Tommy Tuberville won the Alabama gubernatorial race by defeating Democrat Doug Jones. This marked the second time the Republican defeated Jones, having previously unseated him from the U.S. Senate six years ago. Additionally, Republican Michele Tafoya, a former NFL sideline reporter for NBC and ESPN, lost her Minnesota U.S. Senate bid to Democrat Peggy Flanagan.
