Contract negotiations between the Knicks and Karl-Anthony Towns have stagnated, making an agreement unlikely as the team begins training camp next week.

Talks regarding a contract extension between the New York Knicks and Karl-Anthony Towns have stagnated, with an agreement considered unlikely as the team prepares to open training camp next week, sources told ESPN. Towns, who turns 31 in mid-November, is eligible for a maximum extension of four years worth $276 million. While the two sides engaged in extensive discussions during the offseason, there has been no recent movement in negotiations.

Towns is scheduled to earn $57 million this season and holds a $61 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign. During the Knicks' recent championship run, which ended with a five-game NBA Finals victory over the San Antonio Spurs, Towns averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists while shooting 55% from the field. The Knicks finished the postseason with a 16-3 record to secure their first title in 53 years.

Financial constraints have influenced the team's roster decisions, as owner James Dolan has expressed a desire to avoid the punitive second apron of the luxury tax. This directive previously led to the departure of backup center Mitchell Robinson, who signed with the Boston Celtics. In addition to the Towns situation, the Knicks face upcoming decisions for Josh Hart, who is currently extension-eligible, as well as Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby, who become eligible for new deals next offseason.
