UEFA has requested answers by November 2 regarding Gianni Infantino's private investor plans and the independence of the FIFA presidential election process.
FIFA has confirmed its intention to respond to a series of questions from UEFA regarding Gianni Infantino’s presidency, though the governing body has not committed to meeting a November 2 deadline. This date falls 16 days before the deadline for candidates to declare for next year’s FIFA presidential election. The inquiry follows a face-to-face meeting in Zurich where Council members were instructed to submit their concerns in writing.
UEFA Secretary General Theodore Theodoridis sent the formal letter to FIFA counterpart Mattias Grafstrom on Monday, seeking clarity on Infantino's World Cup private investor plan and the influence of U.S. President Donald Trump on FIFA business. The correspondence also addressed the reversal of Folarin Balogun’s red card, the introduction of hydration breaks during recent finals, and the World Cup final half-time show. UEFA stated these topics cannot be deferred until the next scheduled Council meeting on December 16.
Concerns regarding the independence of the electoral process were also raised, specifically citing that electoral committee chair Bruno Chiomento has known Infantino for 20 years. The letter noted Chiomento remained at the World Cup for five weeks with expenses covered by FIFA, leading UEFA to request his recusal and replacement by a deputy. While a FIFA spokesperson cited confidentiality regulations regarding Council documentation, the organization maintained it would not engage with third parties that undermine internal communication protocols. UEFA has indicated it will seek a credible alternative candidate to challenge Infantino in the upcoming election.
