Fleetwood Town secured a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Arsenal after the match ended 1-1 at Highbury Stadium.
Fleetwood Town eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal from the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, winning 5-3 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 in regulation. Teenage defender Conor Haughey scored the winning spot-kick for the League Two side after Jay Lynch saved an attempt from Bruno Guimarães. The result at Highbury Stadium marked a significant upset between two teams separated by 84 positions in the English football pyramid.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi, on loan from Fulham, gave 18th-placed Fleetwood the lead in the 21st minute. Arsenal equalized in the 50th minute when Viktor Gyökeres recorded his first goal of the season following the halftime introduction of Martin Odegaard. The Gunners played the final five minutes of regulation with ten men after teenage prodigy Max Dowman received a red card.
Before the shootout, Lynch maintained the deadlock by making saves against Odegaard and Ben White. Fleetwood converted all five of their penalties to secure the victory and spark a pitch invasion. According to ESPN, the defeat ended the tournament run for a much-changed Arsenal squad that struggled for fluidity throughout the contest.
