Former Jets LB Darron Lee Jailed Without Bond on First-Degree Murder Charge

Former NFL first-round pick Darron Lee remains in custody following a first-degree murder charge involving the blunt force trauma death of Gabriella Perpétuo.

Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Tori Smith ruled Wednesday that Darron Lee will remain in jail without bond. The 31-year-old former NFL linebacker faces a first-degree murder charge and a separate count of tampering with or fabricating evidence following the death of his girlfriend, Gabriella Perpétuo. Lee, who was the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, was arrested late last week in Ooltewah, Tennessee. This Darron Lee murder charge follows a February 5 emergency call for CPR in progress at a residence the couple had been renting for approximately 10 days.

First responders discovered Perpétuo deceased upon arrival at the home. While Lee initially suggested to deputies that the victim may have fallen in the shower, an arrest affidavit details extensive blood found in various areas of the residence that contradicted his statement. Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Detective Brian Lockhart testified that a preliminary autopsy indicated the manner of death was blunt force trauma homicide. Clinical findings revealed the victim suffered a severe brain injury, a broken neck, and a large bruise on her head. Medical examinations also documented black eyes with heavy swelling and dried blood on her face and neck.

Physical Evidence and Crime Scene Details

Authorities executing a search warrant identified multiple forms of trauma on Perpétuo’s body, including a stab wound to her abdomen and an apparent human bite mark on her shoulder. District Attorney Coty Wamp noted that the victim had additional stab wounds on her legs; however, she was wearing pants that lacked corresponding cut marks, leading investigators to believe the clothing was placed on her after the injuries occurred. Inside the Ooltewah home, investigators recovered alcohol, narcotics, and a firearm.

Evidence of a physical struggle was also noted on Lee’s person. The arrest affidavit mentions that the former Ohio State standout had a facial injury, lacerations on his hands, and wounds on his chest. Furthermore, crime scene technicians discovered blood inside the case of Lee’s cellphone. Detectives utilized testing to confirm that blood had been cleaned from multiple locations throughout the house, noting the presence of cleaning supplies near areas where blood stains were no longer visible to the naked eye.

Legal Proceedings and Prior Records

District Attorney Wamp argued against the setting of a bond, stating that the victim was beaten to death and characterizing Lee’s explanation as nonsensical. The prosecution confirmed that this case is eligible for capital punishment, though a final decision on seeking the death penalty has not been reached. At the time of his arrest, Lee was already serving probation in three different jurisdictions. His legal history includes probation in Florida for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in one county and battery in another, alongside probation in Ohio for attempted batteries.

Deputy public defender Mike Little represented Lee during the Wednesday hearing, arguing that bond is frequently granted to defendants facing homicide or first-degree murder charges, even those with prior felony records. Little declined to provide further statements to The Associated Press, citing the early stage of the legal process. A preliminary hearing for the case has been scheduled for March 9.

NFL Career and Background

Before his legal troubles in Tennessee, Lee played 58 games in the NFL between the 2016 and 2020 seasons. His professional career included stints with the New York Jets, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Buffalo Bills. Prior to entering the professional ranks, Lee was a prominent linebacker at Ohio State University. He earned the defensive MVP honors during the 2015 Sugar Bowl, a performance that helped solidify his status as a top-20 selection in the draft. His tenure in the league concluded after the 2020 season, four years before the current allegations surfaced in Hamilton County.
