Garrett Wilson was targeted only three times during a 28-25 loss to the Miami Dolphins, leading to a visible sideline eruption in the fourth quarter.
The New York Jets fell to 2-5 on Sunday following a 28-25 loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium. During the fourth quarter, star wide receiver Garrett Wilson was seen screaming on the sideline toward the bench. Wilson, who finished the game with two catches for 26 yards, clarified afterward that his frustration was not directed at quarterback Geno Smith, but rather stemmed from a desire for more aggressive playcalling in the red zone. Passing-game coordinator Seth Ryan was seated next to Smith during the exchange.
Geno Smith completed 23 of 30 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns, though one interception halted a potential scoring drive. While Wilson was targeted only three times, rookie Omar Cooper Jr. recorded five receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown, and Mason Taylor added two scores on five catches for 62 yards. The Jets offense generated a season-high 377 total yards, including 104 rushing yards from Braelon Allen.
Defensively, the Jets allowed Miami to score on three of their first four possessions, trailing 21-7 at halftime. The Dolphins’ 21 first-half points exceeded their total scoring output from four of their previous five games. Coach Aaron Glenn, whose record dropped to 5-19 and 0-8 in the AFC East, faced loud boos from the home crowd at halftime and the conclusion of the game. Glenn acknowledged the defensive struggles and noted his own disappointment regarding clock management after entering halftime with three unused timeouts while Miami was threatening to score.
