Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has officially withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad ahead of two Nations League fixtures against Israel. The 22-year-old informed head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson of his decision on Saturday morning, citing a matter of "principle" and his personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong. Bazunu clarified via Instagram that his stance is directed against atrocities in the region rather than the Israeli people or Jewish community.

Following Bazunu’s departure, the remaining Republic of Ireland players held a four-hour emergency meeting at their team hotel to determine whether to fulfill the upcoming schedule. Football Association of Ireland (FAI) chief David Courell confirmed that a squad vote resulted in a significant majority choosing to proceed with the matches. The team traveled to Hungary following a prior consensus reached during a two-hour meeting in Pristina on Friday.

The first fixture is scheduled for Sunday at the Nagyerdei Stadium in Debrecen, Hungary, where a limited number of Israel fans will be permitted to attend. A second meeting between the two sides will take place the following Sunday behind closed doors in Backa Topola, Serbia. Between these matches, the Republic of Ireland is set to host Austria in Dublin on Thursday.

For Sunday's match in Debrecen, Irish players intend to wear black armbands to recognize lives lost in the conflict. The squad also plans to forgo traditional pre-match ceremonies, including the exchange of pennants and handshakes. Additionally, players have requested to be excused from media obligations for the remainder of the international window. Coach Hallgrimsson confirmed all other players trained on Saturday and remain available for selection.
