No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna scored his first career goal and added an assist during Toronto's 5-4 overtime win against Nashville.
The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Nashville Predators 5-4 in overtime on Tuesday night at Scotiabank Arena. Gavin McKenna, the No. 1 overall pick in the June draft, scored his first career NHL goal during the second period of his fourth professional game. The 18-year-old Yukon native beat Nashville goaltender Juuse Saros with a high shot after receiving a pass from Auston Matthews.
McKenna also registered his first NHL point earlier in the contest, providing an assist on a goal by William Nylander. Prior to Tuesday's performance, the former Penn State forward had averaged 14 minutes and 32 seconds of ice time through three games with three shots on target and a minus-3 rating.
Toronto’s roster featured several other new acquisitions, including goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, defenseman Darren Raddysh, and winger Kirill Marchenko. The Maple Leafs won the draft lottery to select McKenna after missing the postseason last year for the first time in a decade. ESPN News Services reported these details following the Tuesday night matchup.
