Gerard and Hovland Share Tour Championship Lead at 10-Under Par

Ryan Gerard posted a 5-under 65 on Friday to secure a share of the 36-hole Tour Championship lead alongside Viktor Hovland at East Lake. Both players sit at 10-under 130 entering the weekend of the season-ending event. Gerard’s round featured five birdies and a conversion from just inside 80 feet for another. Hovland carded a 66, highlighted by a birdie on the 155-yard, par-3 15th hole, where the pin was tucked left near a sharp slope on the peninsula green.

Trailing the leaders by one stroke are Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup, who both signed for rounds of 67 to reach 9-under 131. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler sits two shots back at 8-under par following a 67. Cameron Young, who began the day in last place, surged into a tie for the lead during the afternoon before finishing at 8-under total with a round of 62. One-third of the 29-man field is currently separated by only three shots at the tournament's halfway point.

Cameron Young’s Record-Setting Surge

After opening the tournament with a 70 that left him tied for last, Cameron Young played as a single on Friday following the withdrawal of J.J. Spaun. Young went out in 30, recording six birdies in his first 11 holes to reach 7-under for the tournament. Despite a bogey from a bunker on the 12th hole, he concluded his round by holing a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th. The 8-under 62 moved him from the bottom of the leaderboard to within two strokes of the lead in approximately 3.5 hours.

Young’s performance keeps him in contention for PGA Tour player of the year honors, bolstered by previous wins at The Players Championship and Doral. During his solo round, Young briefly acted as his own caddie on the 12th green, removing and placing the flagstick on the fringe while his caddie raked a sand trap. He finished the day with a mock handshake for his non-existent playing partner.

Scheffler and the Presidents Cup Race

Scottie Scheffler overcame two early bogeys that briefly left him five shots off the pace. He responded with five birdies during a six-hole stretch surrounding the turn. On the 17th hole, Scheffler’s approach shot flew over the back of the green, a mistake he attributed to the ball getting caught in a jet stream. He recovered on the par-5 18th, recording a two-putt birdie to remain two shots behind Gerard and Hovland.

For Ryan Gerard, the stakes extend beyond the $10 million top prize and a five-year PGA Tour exemption. The 27-year-old North Carolina native is playing for a potential captain's pick for the Presidents Cup, which will be announced following this event. Gerard noted that he is aware a strong performance this week significantly aids his chances of being selected for the team.

Scoring Conditions at East Lake

The Atlanta course remained relatively soft due to rain on Thursday and overcast skies on Friday. While late-day winds impacted some players, low scores were prevalent across the field. Robert MacIntyre currently occupies the bottom of the leaderboard as the only player not under par. MacIntyre struggled to a 76, which was eight shots over the field average, leaving him 13 strokes behind the leaders. He will play as a single during Saturday’s third round.
