Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 36 points against Detroit on Friday, bringing his two-game total to 71 points during Miami's winless start.
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 36 points on Friday night against the Detroit Pistons, but the Miami Heat fell to an 0-2 record to start the season. This performance gives Antetokounmpo 71 total points through the first two games, matching his career high for scoring in a season's opening pair of contests. Despite this offensive production, Miami has allowed a franchise-worst 259 points across their first two matchups against Detroit and Minnesota.
According to ESPN, Antetokounmpo’s 71-point total is the highest in Heat history for a player's first two games of a season, surpassing the 63 points scored by LeBron James in 2011-12. This marks the first time Antetokounmpo has played in both opening games of a season without securing a victory. While the Milwaukee Bucks started 0-2 in the 2015-16 season, Antetokounmpo only appeared in one of those contests.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra noted that the team is currently navigating a period of adversity as players get to know one another at the start of the year. Antetokounmpo attributed some of the defensive struggles to discouragement when offensive plays do not go as planned, stating that the team was "shocked" by the winless start. The Heat organization remains focused on building trust across all levels of the court to improve defensive consistency following their losses to the Timberwolves and Pistons.
